Planktic foraminiferal Na/Ca: A potential proxy for seawater calcium concentration

چکیده

The reconstruction of seawater calcium concentration ([Ca2+]SW) in the geologic past is crucial to our understanding biogeochemical processes and elemental cycling as linked long-term climate change. Published [Ca2+]SW estimates for Cenozoic differ from each other both direction magnitude change, are associated with large uncertainties. Here we demonstrate potential Na/Ca planktic foraminifera a new proxy reconstructing variations Na/Ca. Because long oceanic residence time Na+ (≫50 Myr), foraminiferal should principle reflect changes [Ca2+]SW. Our culture experiments on live species validate approach, showing that responds when [Na+]SW kept constant, consistent previous shallow water benthic foraminifer inorganic calcite. study suggests affected, small extent, by calcite saturation state (Ωcalcite) but not resolvably affected temperature or salinity. A core tops transect Trilobatus sacculifer shows similar decreasing trends Sr/Ca depth can be dissolution tests. strong covariance Sr supports hypothesis dominant fraction Na resides lattice positions within test. Down records Atlantic Pacific Oceans consistently show 13–28% lower during mid-Miocene than late Pleistocene. After considering effects temperature, salinity diagenesis, conclude observed down decrease primarily reflects concentration. Using calibrations generated top data reconstructed [Ca2+]SW, suggesting was 46 ± 22% higher at present, decreased toward present pattern resembling Neogene evolution represented δ18O record. 16 Myr narrows range suggested proxies, potentially offers way generate continuous sub-million years resolution.

Sulfate in Foraminiferal Calcium Carbonate : Investigating a Potential Proxy for Sea Water Carbonate Ion Concentration

The sulfur content of planktonic and benthic foraminifera was measured in specimens recovered from deep-sea sediment cores and individuals grown in culture. A new method for measuring sulfur in foraminiferal calcium carbonate was developed, employing a high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. The sulfur measurements, expressed as sulfur-to-calcium (S/Ca) ratios in the foram...

An explanation of the effect of seawater carbonate concentration on foraminiferal oxygen isotopes

Stable oxygen isotope ratios of foraminiferal calcite are widely used in paleoceanography to provide a chronology of temperature changes during ocean history. It was recently demonstrated that the stable oxygen isotope ratios in planktonic foraminifera are affected by changes of the seawater chemistry carbonate system: the dO of the foraminiferal calcite decreases with increasing CO3 22 concent...

A sodium calcium arsenate, NaCa(AsO4)

The title compound, NaCa(AsO(4)), was synthesized using a hydro-thermal method at 633-643 K. It has a dense structure composed of alternating layers of distorted [CaO(6)] octa-hedra and layers of [AsO(4)] tetra-hedra and distorted [NaO(6)] octa-hedra, stacked along the a axis. The As, Ca and two O atoms lie on the mirror plane at y = 1/4 (i.e. 4c), while the Na atom lies on an inversion centre ...

Planktic Foraminiferal Species Turnover across Deep-sea Aptian/ Albian Boundary Sections

A major planktic foraminiferal species turnover accompanied by a dramatic reduction in shell size, a fundamental change in shell architecture, and a precipitous drop in the abundance of planktic relative to benthic species occurs across the Aptian/Albian boundary interval (AABI) at globally distributed deep-sea sections. Extinction of the large and distinctive planktic foraminifer Paraticinella...
